The BMW 2002 Turbo is one of the most iconic and collectible models in BMW’s classic car history. Introduced in 1973, it was not only the flagship of the famous 2002 series but also marked a major milestone: the first turbocharged production car ever built by a European manufacturer. The BMW 2002 series (part of the '02 Series'), launched in 1968, was already widely praised for its compact size, lively handling, and practical performance. As the series matured and motorsport demands increased, BMW Motorsport developed a turbocharged version to compete with the high-performance sports cars of the era. Unveiled at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA), the BMW 2002 Turbo stunned audiences with its bold styling, blistering performance, and aggressive character. Its production was short-lived due to the 1973 oil crisis, which severely impacted sales of high-performance sports cars, leading BMW to discontinue the model after only about a year of production. Its distinct and iconic front chin spoiler and wide fender flares makes it an eyecandy for any car enthusiast. It even features a special “2002 turbo” script on the front spoiler, famously printed in reverse so it could be read in rear-view mirrors. It also only came in two colors: Polaris Silver Metallic and Chamonix White. The 2002 Turbo was based on the 2002 tii platform but with reinforced components, upgraded suspension, and enhanced brakes to handle the increased power. Today, the BMW 2002 Turbo is one of the most coveted classic BMWs. With only 1,672 units produced, surviving original examples are rare and command significant value in the collector car market Its motorsport lineage, limited production, and role as BMW’s first turbocharged road car make it a valuable addition to any serious classic car collection.
